    Social Kink Blog
    - - -

So I'm going to be blogging over at Social Kink a bit.

Of course I'll keep my LJ but once in a while you'll find me posting over there as well.

It won't be the same text copy/pasted though (not like I do between myspace and here sometimes).

by the way, SK is on LJ too: [info]social_kink

    Here is my profile there.

Here is my first blog there on the Torture Garden Bday Weekend (with fotos). Just a simple play by play of what I did n stuff and how i suck cuz i missed Fri n Sun, but i can blame it on my house guest at least. And at least I didn't miss the WHOLE weekend like some slanty types over in San Francisco!

(Actually, I was going to link [info]fd_midori's SK profile but the BondageBall peeps left a comment that has a video on it and personally, I find it DAMN annoying to have to listen to. And there's no fucking STOP button on the thing!)

    Random much?
So you've heard a watched pot never boils?

Likewise, a grilled cheese sandwich on the burner does not toast up, like ever, until you finally turn your back on it and get distracted for half a moment...

Yeah. I've heard the carbon is good for you. Really. (I haven't hardly eaten in three days & I'm effing' hungry at 12:40am. Hush)

So I started reading a fic tonight & the dialog, along w/ the internal asides are *killing me* they're so good/funny. I'm a complete sucker for droll humour & this one is full of it. Chock-a-block. The majority of my f'list *waves--hi f'list!* is comprised of Buffy fans; I haven't picked up many SPN friends yet *winks at the few that have defected/shifted to the new fandom* so rec'ing here likely won't do much good but...you should read it. There hasn't even been any sexxing yet--Erm, well, okay, a quickie but it was goooood but was kind of an accident?

It is likely considered RPS, BUT! it's not Jared & Jensen the actorers, it's just this tall guy named Jared & a really good looking bow-legged fella named Jensen that do nothing related to actoring, or on the flip, it has nothing to do with Wincesting, either. *folds up some balloon animals while jazz-handing*

Convinced? Skeptical? Give it a try. If you're one of those that caught the finale & are buried in denial *waves white flag* this will be a welcomed escape.

Dun know the boys? Watch the first two minutes of this. You won't catch any plot/spoilers, but it gives you a figurative snap-shot of who they are, & it's da*mned funny.

Where's my da*mned CAR?! (Red Sky at Morning, 3x06)

Just do it. Waiting for My Real Life to Begin by [info]sneaky_sena.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have charred sammich remains to deal with before the smoke alarm goes off. *face-palm*

ETA: Oh lo*rdy, they're getting to the sexxoring, SO:

    Heat Wave??
uhm has anyone noticed near 90F weather in the general Seattle region?...I mean sun yes and nice and warm, yes, HOT...no. I guess I shouldn't complain & who knows it might be hot tomorrow.

Spent most of today feeling terribly dizzy, which sucked as my to do list didn't get done. Hard to concentrate when the room is spinning and being upright is diffuclt when one keeps blacking out. Quite annoying. Oh well I have all the weekend to catch up my homework.

Speaking of school, my research is going decently... I finally managed to make a graph that wasn't completely wonky. My programming class is helping with understanding the general outlines of manipulating the code even though they are different programming languages & I have learnt a bit more about alpha, beta and gamma particles and such so I can now follow the physics a bit better.

    weather the fuck?
Wasn't it just last week that I was freezing my ass off any time I went outside, no matter how many layers I wore?  Just a scant few weeks back we had ferfuckssake snow?  And today in the 80s?

To misquote MPatHG: "A year passed.  Winter changed into Spring.  Spring changed into Summer.  Summer changed back into Winter.  And Winter gave Spring a miss and went straight on into Summer."

    Alright guys, here it is.

Things have diametrically changed for me in the past week. I have come to a lot of realizations about my world and the way things operate in it and as such I have made a very conscious decision on how I plan to handle my life from here on out. All the important stuff like me making movies, writing acerbic rants and being generally awesome still stay the same, but a path that should have been really obvious has become apparent.

I am excited as fuck but I will need all of your help to make this next project happen. I cannot divulge any specifics right now but here is what I will tell you -

    It will be free.
It will supply the freaky people of the world with something good that they can't get anywhere else.
It will connect people who are not connected right now.
I will need your help to make it happen.

So the next question is my friends, who is on board for making this thing happen?

First round of onsite bread oven plans
We've been given permission to build a bread oven on the Randal site so long as we provide the supplies and labor, with the specific location chosen by the site owner (i.e. someplace logical, not in the middle of the war field).

So, I asked across several lists if anyone has any plans and/or experience with wood fired ovens of this sort.
A very nice lady from Canada who's done baking in the Clinton bake house sent me this:

Here is a link to the Regia anglorum site http://www.regia.org/life/ovens.htm.  This oven is a little low to the ground for practical use, however.  Most pictures of period ovens I have seen in books have them raised to easily workable heights.

I helped to make a clay oven at Godith's some years ago.  Here are some suggestions:
    Primaro Get lots of helpers!
    1.  Your oven should be inside some kind of shelter if you want it to last.
    2. Make a stable base out of those concrete rectangular building blocks. (you could try using stones, but unless they were really flat, you might be asking for trouble as the oven is quite heavy)
    3. Calculate the inner size of the oven and allow for at least 6-8 inches of clay for the outside, so that when you put the strong plywood, or brick base down, you will have plenty of room for the base of the oven.  If you use a playwood base cover this with two layers of fire brick.
    3.  Begin to construct the interior of the oven by mounding up wet sand until it gives you the interior dimensions you want (kind of flattened bee hive shape.  Cover this with wet newspaper.  Decide where your front will be - remember to make it big enough so that standard modern pans will fit, unless you don't care.
    4. Cover the newspaper with a very thick layer of clay.  You will need lots!  Leave an opening for the oven.  Let the oven dry slowly then rake out the sand.  When you fire the oven, the clay will bake and become harder.

Note:  Don't be tempted to use ordinary builder's red brick on this as there is a good chance it will explode.  We used natural clay and this would have considerably reduced the cost of building.

Happy baking!  I am working on some period leavened bread recipes that I hope to try out at Clinton this year.

I'm excited! I'm honestly not a big fan of the Randal site currently, but this would definitely add something to the pluc column for me. Oh, and on another Randal note, they've arranged so they can accept credit card payment for Autumn War, and you'll only need to pay one site fee instead of paying it split between the sponsoring group and the site owner. Big bonus.

"What you see here, is not a 'crawl space'. It's a 'dare you $5 space'."

--Reader comments on the hilarious and--I'll warn you--disturbing Home Inspection Nightmares series at ThisOldHouse.com.

Oh my God, I decided to start at the beginning of the original "Home Inspection Nightmares I" and found this anecdote, which is by no means the worst, but still creepy:

"I moved in to a rental house once way back when. One day the garbage disposal quit working and I thought maybe I had blown a breaker. I traced the line coming out of the disposal down into the basement behind the stairs. There I saw the 110 VAC line plugged in to a wall plug, but there was no plug. Just the bare 12 ga. wires stuffed into the socket."

...Then, I viewed a pic of some sort of small bird/rodent claw sticking out of a vent. Don't be like me. Wait 'til you're done with lunch.

    *faints dead away*

Who was it who said that usage of the word "palimpsest" was a mark of pretension in writing?

I ask because I'm on the seventh page of this article I'm reading as part of my revision work on my own article, and the author has already used "palimpsest" twice.

Maybe I should read something else.

    Hard. Work.
My usual day consists of many trials, tribulations and hardships. Getting the boys through home gladiatorial school has been incredibly tough, but I hope for it to be as equally rewarding one day. My sons fully know life can be rough and that no quarter can or should be given. It is my hope those who read this entry understand our family's mantra:

    CRUSH YOUR ENEMIES.
    SEE THEM DRIVEN BEFORE YOU.
HEAR THE LAMENTATIONS OF THEIR WOMEN.

    And above all else:
    TAKE THEIR BACON.

    That is all.

    For now.

my kingdom for a pair of boots
[yes, the whole post is about boots. ignore at your leisure]

It seems like getting a good pair of boots should be a trivial, or at least only somewhat lengthy - yet still not difficult process. My Tank boots are worn thinner than thin, and though incredibly comfortable, are 1) not water proof, or even worth treating to become water resistant. 2) really not even going to afford me much protection anymore if they are called to the task.

There is next to nothing that interests me in conventional motorcycle boots. Most of them are either clearly designed to cater to the Harley Brand Whore aesthetic, or are designed for high performance racers. There is little in between and what there is, I'm not to proud to say, just looks lame. Call me vain, but . . .touring boots are seriously dorky looking. So my research has retreated to the world where motorcyclists first got their boots from before there were purpose built options. Work / Military boots.

I could get another pair of tankers, but there is not way they can be made weather proof. I don't demand 100% comfort and not dampness ever, even if I'm swimming. . . I'm realistic, I swear! If it's /that/ bad out, I'll either not ride, or if I'm touring, I'll carry boot covers in my gear. But I would like something that has some moisture resistance so I don't have to whip out the boot-jimmys at the the first drop's falling.

There are a lot of decent all weather tactical boots out there, but most of them are ankle height, and I prefer 10" uppers so I can tuck and blouse my trousers and keep the wind from going up there. Most jumpboots, and all the really awesome pole climbing / lineman / logger boots are steel toe, or non-steel safety toe, which really sucks for tactile feedback from your shift lever. (Note, if I could find a place to try these on, or that sold themn with free return shipping like Zappos does, these John Deere's would be high in the running.)

I finally found Matterhorn / Corocan, who make nice rugged field boots in weather proof variations, which is great, except the only one they make in GoreTex that /doesn't/ have thinsulate is an 8". All the 10"s have 200-600grams of thinsulate, and are really geared for cold and wet only... not going to be so good on an 80degree summer day.

/Finally/, for some reason I searched that brand on my favorite surplus supplier (USCAV) and actually found a pair of nice 10" leather, goretex lined, non-insulated, non-huge-harley-soled, non-steel toed, simple black fucking boots. The best thing is that Matterhorn also make HH, which is the brand that makes american tankboots, so the sizing is the same as the boots I already have. I have ordered them. I really really really really hope this is the last pair I try on. They /appear/ to be everything I want. Fingers crossed.

Oh the irony here is that they are listed at USCAV, but not at the manufacturer's site, so presumably these are going out of production. . .which almost ensures they'll be prefect, since I'll not be able to get any more when these wear out. :p

    serendipity rocks my world
I've been considering what I'll do once the current novel draft is done. The plan is to start another one while the current one gels and then I get started revising. The reason for this is that I don't want to kill the momentum of 1000 words every morning (not that I think I'll be able to maintain that in Greece, any more than I did at SMF for example). However, first thing in the morning is not good revision time for me. My internal editor doesn't wake up until 10 or so. This is why I usually revise in the evenings, after work.

So one idea I've had cooking in the backbrain is a story set in the world of "Kip, Running". For a couple of reasons, not least of which it's a fun world to play in, and I think the core idea I've come up with is a pretty decent one. It needs some fleshing out, sure, but that's half the fun.

Another is a fantasy, and because the setting I envision is New England, specifically the Northampton, MA area (because there's a house on the state route between Northampton and Florence that we used to pass whenever we went to visit my grandparents, and the exterior is a DEAD RINGER for the Addams Family house), it'll probably be inescapably Gothic. (Did I mention that in college we used to play hide and seek in the Bridge Street Cemetery? Joss Whedon could've used the place as a Buffy set, seriously.)

Anyway, there's a particular eccentric character that I'm developing for this idea, and while I try to avoid modeling characters too much on real people, especially real people I actually know, this guy is just too perfect. (The character I'm imagining isn't an artist, but he does have a huge library and would totally keep an embalmed corpse around just to unnerve the staff.)

    Current Mood: neat.
